In Isolation: These snails (Xerocrassa seetzeni) inhabit the exposed terrain of the Arava Desert in Israel, where the harsh conditions compel them to retreat inside their shells for 345 days annually. Emerging for a mere 20 days, they engage in active pursuits such as eating, mating, and reproduction (given their hermaphroditic nature). Subsequently, they withdraw back into the safety of their shells for a prolonged, isolated rest. This life cycle draws a compelling parallel to our current reality of lockdowns and isolation. Similar to the snails spending most of their year in seclusion, we too have adapted to a life behind masks and closed doors.
