This series spontaneously emerged after a forest hike, inspired by the discovery of exquisite dry bark from an aged and deceased tree. Without prior planning, I intricately attached the bark to a Simplicity pattern, secured during a garage sale. Seamlessly sewing the two together, I allowed a flow of red thread to emerge from the bark's hole.

The resulting artwork poignantly evoked themes of birth—the pain, blood, and the creation of something new. Simultaneously, the bark symbolized death, signifying the emergence of the new from the remnants of the old. The pattern, tied to a feminine archetype, conjured images of a young girl learning to sew, following traditions, fashion, and the guidance of others.

This work serves as a powerful symbol of personal transformation—the death of certain aspects of self and the simultaneous rebirth of others. A profound, albeit messy and painful, process that ultimately signifies a hopeful and rewarding new beginning.
