Beyond Boundaries places at its center the work of two extraordinary artists, Taher Garboua and Osnat Sand Brent, each driven by a deep need to express themselves through art. Through their unique visual languages, they process emotions, bridge walls of distance and alienation, and invite viewers into their hidden inner worlds. The exhibition not only presents their personal journeys, but also reflects the supportive connections formed within the diverse community of Jaffa, where neighbors from different cultures and religions find common ground.
Taher Garboua, a 17-year-old artist on the autism spectrum, presents a remarkable collection of hand-sewn textile dolls inspired by characters from horror films. “Now I’m less afraid,” he says, describing each figure by name, alongside the director, year of release, and countless details he remembers with precision. Each doll is carefully crafted using both recycled and new materials, revealing his deep dedication and passion for cinema. His work transforms fear into creativity and resilience, offering a glimpse into a world where imagination becomes a source of comfort and strength.
Alongside him, Osnat Sand Brent, a 48-year-old artist with Down syndrome, presents expressive abstract paintings filled with wild yet balanced color. Having studied art for many years, her work reflects a deep emotional world where freedom is found through composition, gesture, and color. Her more recent portraits and still-life paintings add a new dimension to her practice, allowing her to explore self-image and personal reflection. Her work demonstrates the transformative power of art in bravely engaging with emotions such as love, sadness, anger, and vulnerability.
People with Down syndrome and those on the autism spectrum may sometimes face challenges in verbal communication, yet their emotional intelligence and deep capacity for empathy allow them to experience emotions intensely and share them in powerful ways. Taher and Osnat show how art becomes a language beyond words—a vital form of communication, self-expression, and connection. Their creativity makes visible what is often hidden and allows others to enter moments of their inner worlds.
This exhibition is also a tribute to the extraordinary dedication of their mothers, Yael and Naveen, whose love and unwavering support helped bring their children’s artistic journeys to a professional stage. With the support of family, friends, and the Anis Cultural Center, their shared vision became reality—demonstrating how creativity can flourish within strong networks of care and community.
